Asian Dialogues with the World 2:
IMAGE-MAKING IN RELATION TO CIVIL SOCIETY IN ASIA

Objectives
  • To render Asian and non-Asian image makers a platform for questioning and creating dialogues about stereotypical ways of using images of Asia in the mass media and urban culture and to test alternative strategies for challenging stereotypes.

  • To articulate the relationship between image-making in art and culture and the values of the emerging Asian as well as global civil society and social movements.

  • To discuss and reflect on the images of Asia within Asia and beyond Asia so as to understand the complexity of contemporary Asia under construction.

Nature and Structure of Programme
  • Other than the Opening Seminar that kicks off the Programme and is open to the public by invitation, the rest of the Programme consists of close-door group seminars and discussions.

  • The 40 or so Asian and non-Asian participants form themselves into 4 groups and have their group seminars that include presentations and discussions in 4 separate lecture rooms.

  • Each group is to select a member to be the facilitator to manage the group discussions and one to be the secretary to document the major issues/views/ideas raised in their discussions for reporting back to the other groups and to the organizer.
